I’ve been with Darden 25 years in June. For the last 17 of those years, I’ve been a bartender and server at the LongHorn Steakhouse on Eastgate North Drive in Cincinnati, OH. I was one of the first employees hired when the restaurant opened. My team members tease me by saying that the building was built around me
Team members are the backbone of our restaurants. For some of them, creating great dining experiences for our guests is so fulfilling that it becomes their life’s work. Olive Garden Server Diane Eslinger who celebrated her 35th anniversary with Darden recently has a large group of regular guests and has been named salesperson of the month multiple times, said General Manager Kelly Lynch.
As a global retailer, we see firsthand the astonishing diversity that exists between our stores located in different countries. We see it in our supply chain as well, and we believe we’re at our best when we promote that diversity for the benefit of our customers.
For some of our team members, creating great dining experiences for our guests is so fulfilling that it becomes their life’s work. Today we hear from Shirley Wells, a 35-year Darden team member, has been a cook at the Olive Garden in Springfield, IL, for 21 years. She was honored with a culinary trip to Italy in 2006.
“The Breakthrough Leadership for Women workshop was by far the best course I’ve taken at Caterpillar in the nine years I’ve been here. It made me learn about myself, gave me confidence and made me really connect with women at work for the first time.”
We believe creating excellence in the hospitality industry is not only good for our business, but for the health of our local communities and the industry as a whole.
Every day Elisa, a single mother of two, walks through the city of Tulcán, Ecuador, selling sheets, quilts and blankets to raise enough money to feed her children. It’s an extremely hard life but she has successfully grown a micro-business and someday hopes to be able to set up a small shop so she doesn’t have to walk to sell her wares.
I thought of myself as a tech-savvy millennial… and then I spent the day with Girls Who Code at Fullscreen Media. Sitting in the audience as teenage girls presented business recommendations about social sharing and streaming video, I realized that there has never been a more exciting time to be at the intersection of tech and media, and that I have a lot of catching up to do!
Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to march in the San Diego Pride Parade alongside 300 other “Qualcommers,” their families, and friends. It’s the sixth year in a row that I’ve participated in this celebration of our LGBT community, and I always find it a personally rewarding experience. In a way, the parade is a reflection of our company: a diverse community, marching forward together.
