Many of the preventable diseases plaguing this community, like diabetes, are associated with obesity. In the area served by Congreso, one of the city’s largest multi-service organizations for the Hispanic community, 37.1% of adults and 39.8% of children six and older were reported as overweight or obese in a 2012 survey by Public Health Management Corporation.

On recent routine United States Public Health inspections conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Holland America Line’s ms Noordam achieved a perfect score of 100, marking the ship’s second consecutive perfect score, and ms Veendam also scored 100. The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) today named Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, the 2015 recipient of the STTI Episteme Award supported by The Baxter International Foundation. Campbell is the Anna D. Wolf Chair and Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. As Episteme Laureate, Campbell will be the keynote speaker at STTI’s 43rd Biennial Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., November 7-11, 2015, where she will be presented with the $15,000 award.
