Earlier this week, AB in partnership with the Emerging Markets Investors Alliance (EMIA) and Societe Generale hosted the Impact and Blended Finance Conference.
Purpose isn’t just the latest marketing buzzword or moment-in-time tactic. Not only do Americans expect companies to lead with Purpose, they are ready to reward these companies in a variety of ways. In fact, companies that lead with Purpose will stand to build deeper bonds with existing consumers, expand the consumer base and enlist those brand advocates to share the brand message.
Not so long ago, the major tech companies were held up as ideal models of innovation and progress. Now, a reality check seems to be setting in as they face increased consumer and regulatory scrutiny. Facebook continues to be under fire for lack of transparency in how it shares customer data. Amazon is taking hits for “unethical and illegal” workplace conditions in the Chinese factories that produce its Echo and Kindle devices. It’s gotten to the point where Hollywood is turning out features in which Silicon Valley figures are portrayed as supervillains.
Brands and organizations shared aspirational and inspirational messages and stories throughout the week – from Vancouver’s City Manager Sadhu Johnston who explained how Vancouver plans to be greenest city in the world by 2020 to REI’s ambition to awaken a lifelong love of the outdoors for all. Here are three ideas – some big and some small – that stood out to us last week:
A leading global food company that celebrated its 150th birthday in 2016 is the first brand to share its work on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a 3BL Media professional development webinar series kicking off June 19 at 10:30 a.m. ET.
Mono-capitalism, with its singular obsession on financial capital, has fueled growth in global economies and markets that ultimately threatens sustainability and broad prosperity. The resulting megatrends, such as climate change and dangerous wealth disparities, require fit-to-task responses – most notably, transitioning to multi-capitalism as the new operating system for our markets. At its 5th International Conference at KPMG in Amsterdam on June 12-13, Reporting 3.0 is releasing a Transformation Journey Blueprint – as well as a Blueprint for Integrated Accounting and a Blueprint for Integral Business Models – to guide all actors to contribute productively to the shift from degenerative to regenerative economies.

As part of the Global Climate Action Summit, WWF, together with a broad coalition of partners, today issued the 30X30 Forests, Food and Land Challenge: calling on businesses, states, city and local governments, and global citizens to take action for better forest and habitat conservation, food production and consumption, and land use, working together across all sectors of the economy to deliver up to 30% of the climate solutions needed by 2030.
Corporations have become more diverse and inclusive. There are more women on the customer and leadership ends. The end customer is not the male engineer he once was; she is a female CEO or sustainability manager. Her perspective changes business outcomes and rounds out discussions in powerful ways. It makes a difference in our orientation for customers and employees, and offers a rounded view of the problems they face. In encouraging progress at Schneider, we can now report that 42 percent of board members are female, 21 percent of global leadership is female and more than 40 percent of new hires are women.
Sustainability is integral to General Motors’ business strategy and core to the company’s global operations, as demonstrated in its latest Sustainability Report (gmsustainability.com) released today.
