A backup power failure at a wastewater facility can lead to immediate and severe consequences. Pumps stop, tanks overflow, leaving contaminants easy access to our waterways. What started as a brief outage, then turns into a major public health and environmental emergency.
Allie Kelly, executive director of The Ray, and Harriet Langford, president of The Ray will speak in a VERGE Talk on 9/19. Can One Highway Drive the Future?
When guests visit our integrated resorts, they are treated to elegantly designed spaces, celebrity chef restaurants and exquisite customer service. But rarely do they realize what it takes to operate these mini cities behind the scenes. While our ultimate purpose is guest satisfaction, we also consciously aim to reduce our environmental footprint.
Our goal is to develop resorts that become destinations and create everlasting memories for our guests. At the same time, we also try to do it with the utmost respect for our host communities. We all have a stake in protecting the planet’s natural resources, which is why our team is working hard to design buildings with high performance and sustainability in mind.

In a quest to create healthier office environments, more employers have embraced the scientific research behind modern office design. There’s even a high-tech facility called the Well Living Lab, a collaboration between the Mayo Clinic and Delos, that hosts studies on “how the indoor environment influences health, well-being and performance, from stress to sleep quality, physical fitness to productivity.”
70% of healthcare outcomes are based on the physical and social environments that we live in and work in daily. That includes our buildings, like how an office is designed or how our homes are constructed. But it also includes how we behave – how active we are, whether we smoke, and what we eat each day. It is clear that our physical environment has a significant impact on our health but it can also have an impact on our health-related behaviors.
