How a Scorecard Can #Movethedate
As of August 2, 2017, humanity has used up all the resources provided by Mother Nature for the whole 2017. And each year that day comes earlier. For more than 10 years, Schneider Electric has been committed to #MoveTheDate of #EarthOvershootDay
The costs of global ecological overspending are becoming increasingly evident around the world, in the form of deforestation, drought, fresh-water scarcity, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But the trend can be reversed, if we moved Earth Overshoot Day back 4.5 days every year, we would return to using the resources of one planet by 2050. Global Footprint Network’s research team is able to work by calculating the number of days by which Earth Overshoot Day would move if the solutions they identified were implemented.
Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation is also engaged to #movethedate. The company is making progress year over year since 2005 by using Planet & Society barometer, a simple scoring scale of 10 that provides an overall measure of sustainable development improvements. It highlights three-year commitments to specific objectives that advance three pillars: planet, profit, and people. The barometer’s 16 indicators show how Schneider is doing in meeting sustainability megatrends head on: Climate, Circular Economy, Ethics, Health & Equity, and Development.

The barometer’s results are the Group non-financial results; they are presented in an integrated manner, together with the Group’s financial information: by the CEO at the annual and half-year results, and by the CFO at the first and third quarters’ results. The barometer’s score is included in the variable compensation of the global functions and all the leaders of the company and in the long-term incentive plans for the 3,000 beneficiaries each year. Finally, the indicators are audited every year by an independent third party (limited or reasonable assurance).
Reaching a total score of 8.91/10 at the end of June 2017, Schneider Electric exceeds its barometer target of 8.25/10. The barometer’s score having reached 8.48/10 at the end of December 2016, its 2017 target has been restated at 9/10 instead of 8/10 initially.
