This is the time of year when we reflect on the many things that those who have served in the armed forces have given to our country. But as service members like me know, serving in the military can give you back just as much. Serving as a Navy reservist gave me many skills that I brought with me to the workplace. For the third consecutive year, in conjunction with the Chicago Parks Foundation and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, CITGO sponsored a Mid-Coast Cleanup as a part of its Caring for Our Coast initiative. Earlier this fall, students from King College Prep and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences joined volunteers from the CITGO Lemont Refinery for a cleanup project at the 41st Street Beach in Chicago. In a one-mile area, the group collected 94.9 pounds of trash in just a few hours. The most abundant items picked up were cigarette butts and plastic water bottles.
