What happens when yesterday’s landfills become today’s problem—cracking, leaking, or resurfacing in the wake of poor maintenance or climate-driven disasters?
Water and wastewater utilities considering the use of public-private partnerships (PPP) often express concerns that such arrangements could lead to rate increases and diminished service. However, it is possible to provide ratepayer safeguards and allow reasonable returns on private investments under PPP models through the implementation of an asset management framework.
DuPont has released its 2016 Sustainability Report, highlighting progress against its 2020 Sustainability Goals and ongoing commitment to areas such as food security, environmental stewardship, and diversity and inclusion.
“DuPont has a long history of developing sustainable solutions for a remarkable number of industries,” said Krysta Harden, DuPont vice president of Public Policy and chief sustainability officer. “We understand that to carry that legacy of success into the future, DuPont must not only innovate relentlessly to create value for our customers but also continue to integrate sustainability into how we operate and what we produce to also create value for society. Our sustainability goals and commitments do just that.”
In the 20 years that Dianne Loewen has lived and worked in Dryden, Ontario, she has seen time and again how the tight-knit community helps others. Local Arlington, Texas resident, Mrs. Locke has been fascinated with landfills for years. Her grandson recently contacted Republic Services, explaining that his grandmother had included on her "bucket list" the opportunity to get a tour of the local landfill and have a picnic lunch at the site among all the activity.
Last week on CBS News I watched a piece about Dutch farmer Marc van Rijsselberghe, who is running experiments in the Texel Islands, Netherlands, to grow potatoes using in salt-ridden land. As more and more salty water seeps through the Dutch dykes onto its farmland, van Rijsselberghe and others are finding ways to adapt.
We believe small efforts can add up to a big impact and our sites have the data to prove it. Thanks to local initiatives and the combined efforts of our employees we were able to increase recycling and our landfill diversion rate by over 25 percent from 2014 to 2015.
