#WomensHistoryMonth at Cox Enterprises: Get to Know Sheila Stallings
Sheila Stallings is Cox Communications’ Executive Director of People Services
In celebration of Women's History Month, female leaders from across Cox Enterprises are sharing insights from their experience throughout the month of March. Sheila Stallings is Cox Communications’ executive director of people services.
What women inspire you and why?
Throughout my life, I have had several women who inspired me for various reasons, both directly and indirectly. I will always recognize my mother who is a rock and has an awesome way of making people feel special. I have been inspired by Oprah for reaching heights she could have never imagined and continuously giving back, and more recently, by Michelle Obama for being the first African-American first lady and performing at an exceptional level, and Sally Yates for taking a stand even if it is not popular.
What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership?
The most significant barrier is the lack and need for more women in leadership roles. Women are empowered by the success of others and the belief that they can go after greater roles including non-traditional roles.
What will be the biggest challenge and opportunity for the generation of women behind you?
This question is hard because in so many ways I am so impressed with the generations behind me, and there are times I am saddened by how society continues to minimize their strength, importance and power.
What are the best and worst decisions you've ever made?
The best decision I made was to leave a company where I previously worked for 16 years to join Cox. The worst decision I made was waiting too long in making a change to do something different.
What is your perspective on work/life balance?
Having a balance is essential to your mind, body and spirit. It can be the best of both when you don’t neglect either one.
What career advice do you have for others?
Know your strengths and skills, continue to be a student, be open to feedback, work hard and have fun.
