Intermodal freight – consumer goods that move in containers and trailers by more than one mode of transportation – has been one of Norfolk Southern’s fastest-growing market segments. That reflects a trend of shippers choosing rail over the highway as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to move products to market.

Studies show that trains on average are four times more fuel-efficient than trucks and generate 75 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions per ton-mile of freight moved. Norfolk Southern’s intermodal rail corridors contribute to sustainable business across the value chain, promoting fuel conservation and greenhouse gas reduction and helping customers lower their supply chain emissions. At the same time, Norfolk Southern enables economic growth and job creation in the states and communities where the railroad operates.

The Crescent Corridor is the backbone of NS’ intermodal network, spanning 2,500 miles over 11 states, connecting shippers and consumers from New Orleans and Memphis to northern New Jersey.
