For many tech companies, remote work is starting to become the long-term reality, rather than a temporary change, and experts say it could spur a more diverse workforce – an area where tech companies have long floundered and where the percentages of Black and Latinx employees are still often in the single digits.
When the coronavirus outbreak spread to the US earlier this year, most tech companies quickly moved their workforces home. As case counts continue to rise, many have made remote work a more long-term option, with some companies, including Twitter and Facebook, even switching to a permanent distributed work model.
When jobs are no longer constrained by location and companies aren't only recruiting people who live in (or are willing to move to) the same expensive cities, it opens up a broader and more diverse pool of candidates.
