Samsung Awards Technology to 255 Schools Nationwide in First Phase of $2 Million Solve for Tomorrow Contest
Five schools in every state and Washington, D.C., receive technology to support STEM learning across the country
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., November 7, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Samsung today announced the 255 state finalists in its nationwide Solve for Tomorrow contest, a commitment to raise awareness of and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning across America. Five winners from every state will benefit, receiving two Samsung Galaxy® Tabs as well as the opportunity to advance in the contest and receive additional products and software from Samsung and program partners DirecTV and Adobe.

The 255 state finalists, whose details are available at samsung.com/solve, were chosen from more than 2,300 applicants. This year’s ideas ran the gamut from harnessing wind energy across the Alaskan tundra to reviving the coral reefs of the Florida coast—all to address the various needs of local communities. The diversity and creativity of the entries testify to the great potential of American students and teachers.
Samsung created Solve for Tomorrow in 2010 to get students and teachers excited about STEM by challenging them to apply their classroom learning to solve a real-world issue in their local community. This year, Solve for Tomorrow has doubled the value of the prize packages from last year.
In the next stage of the competition, the 255 state finalists will be evaluated on the lesson plans they submit and 51 state winners (representing the 50 states plus Washington, D.C.) will be selected. Each state winner will receive a technology package valued at $20,000*. From that pool of 51, the public can vote for their favorites from February 14 to March 13, 2014 to determine the 15 national finalists who will each receive technology packages valued at $35,000*. The five national winners will each receive a prize package valued at $140,000* and be honored in April 2014 at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Since 2004, Samsung’s education programs have contributed more than $13 million* in technology to more than 500 public schools in the United States. Samsung continues to support children’s education by providing tools that empower young people to learn through a variety of STEM initiatives, including the company’s Summer Science Camps, Mobile Application Academies and a partnership with the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF).
