India Drafts First Ever Anti-Human Trafficking Law

Around 21 Million people are affected by Human Trafficking. Recently, India’s Women’s Minister Maneka Gandhi unveiled India’s first ever human trafficking law.

Gandhi explained the draft bill would increase the number of violation convictions and strengthen prosecution of violators through implementing the development of a special investigative agency. The agency would function as an intelligence base and coordinate efforts among states to collect information on human trafficking offenses. According to to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, South Asia is the fastest-growing and second-largest region for human trafficking in the world.

Gandhi’s effort in unveiling a draft bill is one example of a global movement towards eliminating human trafficking. The United Kingdom increased their awareness recently by passing the UK Modern Day Slavery act, which stipulates all companies that exceed a £36 million income threshold, must report on their efforts to mitigate slavery from their supply chain.
