GM Mexico Facilities Improve Environment One Tree at a Time

As a company, we are committed to preservation of the world’s natural resources, and our efforts are supported by employees and our communitiesaround the globe.  From reforestation projects to creation of wildlife habitats to conservation of water and land use, our global teams volunteer countless hours to our preservation efforts.

Four of our facilities in Mexico demonstrated this commitment by organizing several tree planting events in 2013 where more than 8,000 trees have been planted by GM employees in the plant communities.

  • Employees from Toluca Complex, Toluca Regional Engineering Center, Customer Care and Aftersales, and Central Offices met with their families at Parque Sierra Morelos, a 302-acre park northwest of the city, to plant 3,000 trees and provide maintenance to trees planted during previous reforestations.
  • GM Silao Complex, together with General Mills, planted 2,000 trees with the help of 400 employees and their families at Cerro del Cubilete, the 8,900-foot mountain surrounding Mexico’s iconic Cristo Rey statue.
  • Employees from our San Luis Potosi Complex teamed up with suppliers to enrich the Gogorrón natural protected area by planting more than 250 mesquite trees. They also hosted an environmental fair to raise awareness about water management, chemical handling and waste segregation at GM.
  • Ramos Arizpe Complex participated at the annual Social Reforestation Day organized by Mexico’s National Forestry Commission. With the help of their families and suppliers, employees planted nearly 2,500 trees, restoring two acres of forest devastated by fires.

In addition to providing habitat for wildlife, forests are important in the fight against climate change because they capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large quantities of carbon in their trunks and roots, playing a significant role in reducing greenhouse gases.

Thanks to the continued dedication of these four facilities and numerous others around the world, our commitment to reforestation continues to grow.
