ICMM Releases Annual Review 2011 Marking Ten Years of Progress
(3BL Media) London - 2 March 2012 - The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has released its 2011 Annual Review – Our Journey – which marks the 10th anniversary of the organization.
“In its first 10 years, ICMM has made significant progress,” said new ICMM chair, Marius Kloppers (CEO, BHP Billiton). “We have established a solid foundation for member accountability. All ICMM member companies commit to ICMM’s 10 sustainable development principles and formally report their progress through independently verified reports.”
For the third time in an ICMM annual review, member progress was assessed against their reporting and assurance commitments. Seventeen out of the 21 member companies obtained a G3 A + application level compared to 15 in 2010 and 8 in 2009. This means the 17 companies reported on all the indicators required in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Mining and Metals Sector Supplement and sought independent third party assurance of their reports.
The sector supplement was developed by GRI in partnership with ICMM and sets the standard for the entire industry.
The theme of this year’s annual review – Our Journey – showcases the significant milestones ICMM and its members have achieved over the past year including:
- Areva and Hydro joined ICMM as the first companies to follow the new member admission process
- the Council of CEOs formally launched ICMM’s climate change program, the first new program since its formation
- ICMM signed a second Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to renew their joint commitment to work together
“As we reach our 10th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on ICMM’s short history”, said Anthony Hodge, ICMM President. “The milestones described in this year’s annual review provide a strong testament to hard work, creative thinking, willingness to collaborate and foresight by all those who contribute to our initiatives.”

About ICMM
The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) was established in 2001 to act as a catalyst for performance improvement in the mining and metals industry. Today, the organization brings together 21 mining and metals companies as well as 31 national and regional mining associations and global commodity associations to address the core sustainable development challenges faced by the industry.
ICMM serves as a change agent – not in areas affecting competitive positioning, but related to our members’ social and environmental responsibilities where collaboration makes sense. Our vision is one of leading companies working together and with others to strengthen the contribution of mining, minerals and metals to sustainable development. www.icmm.com
