(3BL Media) May 29, 2012 - ICMM joined the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues (IPIECA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to translate a first-of-its-kind practical guide into Spanish. The guide aims to help mining companies maintain operational security while ensuring respect for human rights and humanitarian law.
The publication titled Implementation Guidance Tools (IGT), published in English in 2011, addresses some of the challenges that many participants have been grappling with since the The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) were launched over a decade ago.
A comprehensive instrument to implement the VPs, it is particularly useful to companies operating in geographical areas of conflict and weak governance.
Aimed at project level staff responsible for corporate security and human rights commitment, the IGT contains four interactive modules and real-world scenarios to help companies engage with stakeholders and assess the risks and impacts of their security operations. It can be easily integrated into existing due diligence and project management procedures.
The VPs are a set of non-binding principles created to assist extractive companies in balancing security concerns with human rights.
