ICMM Launches Chemicals Management Progress Report

(3BL Media) September 17, 2012 - Today, ICMM launched 'Minerals and Metals Management 2020: a chemicals management progress report' at the third session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM3) in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Following an intervention in which ICMM's John Atherton reaffirmed the organization's commitment to United Nations' Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) , the report was recognized as an official information document to the ICCM3.     The products of the mining and metals industries are classified and regulated as chemicals. This is in addition to the use of other chemicals in metals processing. Thus, a large part of the management of mining and metal production is the management of chemicals: their sourcing, transport, storage, use, production, and the management of their occupational health and environmental risks through their life cycles.     The report reviews the commitments that ICMM made in 2009 to SAICM; the progress that ICMM and its members have made toward these commitments; how they plan to fulfil them; and where the mining and metals industry stands with regard to chemicals management.       Click here to download the report.     The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) was established in 2001 to improve sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry. Today, it brings together 21 mining and metals companies as well as 31 national and regional mining associations and global commodity associations.
