Global Health Experience To Visit D.C. For The First Time During “Global Health Week On The Hill”

Seattle, Wash., Feb. 27, 2013 /3BL Media/ – The Global Health Experience, which drew thousands of visitors in Seattle, makes its first trip to Washington, D.C. this week. Nine organizations are partnering to bring the exhibit to the East Coast in order to draw congressional focus to global health during “Global Health Week on the Hill”, February 26-March 5, 2013. Activities include a public exhibition of the Global Health Experience display in the Rayburn Building foyer, a high-level Congressional staff briefing outlining government funding and creative partnerships, a simulcast of the newly-released Global Burden of Disease Study results featuring Bill Gates, and a Congressional reception in the Global Health Experience exhibit in cooperation with the Congressional Caucuses on Global Health and Effective Foreign Assistance.

“Less than one percent of the federal budget is spent on foreign assistance. At no other time in history have we made the progress we’ve seen in the last ten years,” said Lisa Cohen, Executive Director of the Washington Global Health Alliance. “Now with funding levels in jeopardy, we risk losing critical momentum in the fight against diseases like AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. WGHA is partnering with an exceptional group of NGOs to creatively highlight the enormous impact foreign assistance has in saving millions of lives around the world.”

Monday’s Congressional staff briefing features Dr. Nils Daulaire, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS); Rear Admiral Timothy Ziemer, U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator, President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI); Julia Martin, Chief Operations Officer, President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR); Col. Dr. Peter Weina, Deputy Commander, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and others.  

The Washington Global Health Alliance, along with PATH, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI), the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, World Vision, International Medical Corps, the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation, the Global Health Council and the Global Health Technologies Coalition created “Global Health Week on the Hill” to highlight the critical role U.S. foreign assistance plays in health, security and diplomatic efforts worldwide.
