ZLI's Insect Apocalypse Campaign
ZLI's Insect Apocalypse Campaign draws attention to the unexpected effects of artificial light on food security. The catastrophic global decline of insects has many causes, but chief among them is the impact of artificial light on the robustness, diversity and distribution of insect populations. ZLI's Insect Apocalypse Campaign supports research into how this threat might best be managed.
ZLI's Insect Apocalypse Campaign encourages integrated pest management agricultural strategies, in conjunction with artificial light at night (ALAN) reductions and smart lighting controls. It supports research in three arenas across the ZLI Framework of Photo-physology, Sensory Ecology and Integrative Biology. Emphasis is also given to the centrality of insects to ecological food chains, underscoring the need to protect insect biodiversity for the whole of environmental health.
ZLI's Insect Apocalypse Campaign seeks sponsors and donations to help fund research, offer educational and entertainment programming, create wildlife advocacy media and to create international partnerships serving a global and optimistic vision of the future.
