Goldcorp and FLSmidth have been recognized for their co-development of EcoTailsTM, as the joint winners of the Mining Magazine Editor’s Award 2017, an award given annually to celebrate outstanding new technologies, innovations and initiatives within the mining sector.

In 2017, Goldcorp’s Marlin gold mine in Guatemala became the second gold mining operation audited to verify that cyanide facilities had been decommissioned and that the International Cyanide Management Code (Cyanide Code) no longer applies to the operation. The first, Goldcorp’s El Sauzal mine in Mexico, was decommissioned in 2015.

Goldcorp’s #DisruptMining event in March will generate new ideas for innovative technologies that could fundamentally transform the mining sector. With asset productivity as a major issue facing the mining industry today, companies are looking to digital technology to reduce costs, drive productivity and enhance financial performance.

Goldcorp is amongst the industry’s leaders in our approach to innovation and responsibility at every stage of the mining cycle and our involvement in the Innovation Superclusters Initiative provides an additional collaborative opportunity to support the industry’s transformation.

As one of the oldest operating mines in Canada, Porcupine Gold Mines (PGM) has been an integral part of the Timmins, Ontario community since 1910. Part of its community commitment includes placing a high priority on water conservation and preservation to reduce its environmental impact.

Until relatively recently, the mining industry has been slow to innovate. Now, virtually every area of mining is undergoing a technological upheaval. At the forefront of this transformation in mining are disruptive technologies – ground-breaking concepts that challenge traditional and accepted practices and are shaking up the industry.

In 2016, we sponsored and participated in the tenth annual International Mines Rescue Competition in Sudbury, Ontario. The well-attended competition is a global event focused on improving mine rescue knowledge and safety practices, as well as providing an opportunity for participants to demonstrate their abilities and commitment to excellence in mine safety. There were 27 mine rescue teams, representing 13 nations, competing in a number of events including an underground scenario, firefighting exercises, first aid and a high angle rope rescue.

Many of our operations are taking important steps forward to reduce or reuse water and help Goldcorp move Towards Zero Water. Water is an integral part of mineral processing, but is also necessary for the maintenance of vehicles, which need to be cleaned before they can be effectively serviced.

n our 2016 Sustainability Report, “Safe Enough for Our Families” is the phrase that captures one of our core values, guides our efforts and and supports the safety and health of our people at work, at home and in their communities. Working safely remains the top priority at Goldcorp –it is one of our core values, along with , responsibility and productivity, which are upheld by every employee. We believe in supporting programs that encourage youth to pursue careers in mining and to create long-term socio-economic benefits in the communities where we operate.

This past summer, our Éléonore mine in Northern Québec welcomed several new faces to its workforce with its Summer Student Employment Program (SSEP).

The SSEP was launched as an opportunity for Cree students at a post-secondary education level to learn more about the mining industry. The SSEP differs from classroom training in that it allows students to build skills through hands-on work experience alongside miners and employees.
