JetBlue’s Environmental and Responsibility Report

Highlights from the 2016 annual report include:

  • Environment

The aviation industry made history with a worldwide global carbon offset agreement. In addition to joining the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials, JetBlue also signed one of the biggest renewable jet fuel agreements in history.

  • Innovation

Smart investments in new technology today better prepare JetBlue for opportunities in the future. JetBlue remains committed to NextGen and is investing more than $60 million in technologies to create much-needed efficiencies and reduce emissions.

  • Education

Future success depends on the potential that is nurtured today. In 2016, JetBlue provided support for crewmembers to complete their college degrees. While, JetBlue For Good, the airline’s platform for social impact and corporate responsibility, and the JetBlue Foundation made STEM and aviation education more accessible for students from traditionally underserved communities.

  • Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity is the blueprint for a robust business. Crewmembers from different backgrounds are better able to anticipate the needs of diverse customers. In 2016, JetBlue broadened its horizons by serving new communities and encouraging crewmembers to meet their highest potential through crewmember resource groups and mentorship opportunities.

  • Caring

JetBlue flies planes, but it ultimately connects people. In 2016, JetBlue responded to crises and natural disasters in its various communities including the Orlando shootings and Hurricane Matthew. JetBlue For Good also built its 25th playground in an area of need and donated more than $1.5 million to charities. While crewmembers volunteered 170,000 hours for a variety of causes.

“Blue Horizons for Autism” Makes Flying a Reality
For the parents of many autistic children, air travel doesn’t seem like an option. Blue Horizons allows families affected by autism to practice the air travel experience in a realistic yet relaxed setting, allowing them to be better prepared for future travel.

Diversity & Inclusion

“Gateway Select” Pilot Program Will Diversify the Skies
With Gateway Select, JetBlue hopes to train and hire high-quality pilots while also making the profession more accessible to a broader range of candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences. JetBlue expects that the program will open up the profession by helping make the dream of becoming a pilot a reality to people who would not otherwise have had the opportunity.

Reducing Emissions with $60M of NextGen Technology
In 2016, after a decade of planning and debate, airlines and the FAA finally greenlit key updates to outdated tracking, navigation, and communication technologies. JetBlue is investing $60 million in NextGen technology to create much-needed efficiencies and reduce emissions.

Diversity & Inclusion

Healthcare Benefits for Families of All Shapes and Sizes
Healthy crewmembers mean a healthy JetBlue, so it’s on us to keep improving. Building on the 2015 introduction of in-network health coverage for gender reassignment surgery, in 2016 we extended fertility benefits to support all crewmembers to build families.

Environment

New Global Metric Will Monitor Zero Emission Growth from 2020
In October 2016, JetBlue and the aviation industry made history. Alongside the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), we collectively agreed to reduce GHG emissions from international flights.

Social Impact & Volunteering

Crewmembers Earn Free Travel for Charity of Their Choice
For every 50 hours of volunteer time logged – whether through a JetBlue organized event or their own independent volunteer activity – JetBlue donates two round-trip travel certificates to that crewmember’s chosen charity.

Inclusion Works — Opportunities for Those with Disabilities
Internally, we create job opportunities and promote inclusion through frameworks like the Reaching Blue Heights talent pipeline program, Disability Career Fairs, and Disability Mentoring Day (DMD). Out in the world, we show up and speak out.

Education

Nurturing the Next Generation of Aviators Via ACE Programs
The ACE Academies program gives middle school and high school youth exposure to STEM, aerospace, and aviation opportunities through intensive, hands-on summer camps.

First-of-Its-Kind Airport Farm Donates $10K of Produce
JetBlue isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty for the sake of efficiency. The airport farm at JFK’s T5 – the first of its kind – uses an otherwise idle space to grow plants that not only look lovely, but also work hard.

Crewmember Resource Groups Bolster Co-Workers and the Community
In 2016, Crewmember Resource Groups (CRGs) – JetPride, Women in Flight, Vets in Blue, and Blue Conexión – deepened relationships with co-workers and the community.
