Environment: Building a More Sustainable Future

For Bacardi, environmental sustainability is good business – an approach that dates to the very beginning of the company more than 158 years ago. When Bacardi founder Don Facundo Bacardí Massó started his business in 1862, he accepted the Spanish government’s challenge to reduce surplus amounts of molasses in Cuba, leading to the crafting of BACARDÍ® rum. Repurposing old whisky barrels to age his rum was also part of his original plan, a practice still in use today. Our environmental sustainability commitment has grown over seven generations and our vision is to be the world's most environmentally responsible spirits company. Our focus areas for building a more sustainable future include water, climate change, and waste. As the first global spirits company to pledge against single-use plastic straws in March 2016, we continue our efforts to find more ways to remove non-essential, non-recyclable single-use plastic waste and are currently reviewing opportunities across our supply chain.

Bacardi Receives First Certification in Puerto Rico from Wildlife Habitat Council for Conservation and Education Efforts
Bats are more than just an icon on a label for Bacardi. The company, synonymous with the world’s only flying mammal, stepped up its environmental stewardship efforts at the world’s largest premium rum distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico to create a full-circle bat conservation campaign in 2018. The initiative was applauded during the annual WHC Conservation Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, where Bacardi demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship by securing the WHC Conservation Certification. This is the first WHC certification for a program in Puerto Rico and the second certification for a Bacardi facility, the first was for the program at Bacardi Bottling Corporation in Jacksonville, FL, which recently achieved re-certification.

Forbes Mexico Ranks Bacardi as Example of Environmental Leadership
Forbes Mexico recently ranked the top 30 companies setting the example for environmental sustainability. The report, “Green companies, climate change: five degrees from the disaster ", ranked Bacardi, the only spirits company to make the list, as number 24. The annual ranking is determined through a Sustainability and Transparency Index by which Forbes qualifies the transparency and availability of information related to the measurements and results of companies in terms of environmental care and reduction of CO2 emissions.

Bacardi Raises the Bar with Distinct Corporate Responsibility Programs
With its commitments to alcohol responsibility, disaster relief efforts, women’s empowerment, and significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and water usage, Bacardi Limited solidified its position as a socially and environmentally responsible leader, as demonstrated in the company’s 2018 Corporate Responsibility (CR) Report. As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, and in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Bacardi’s CR efforts are fueled by its expanded “Good Spirited” platform.

Bacardi USA Receives U.S. EPA 2018 SmartWay Excellence Award
Bacardi U.S.A., Inc., the United States import and distribution arm of one of the world's leading spirits and wine producers, was honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency in transportation logistics. The SmartWay Excellence Award is the EPA’s highest recognition for demonstrated leadership for Shippers and Carriers.

For the third time in four years, the EPA has recognized top environmental performance by Bacardi USA in demonstrating a series of coordinated measures to effectively integrate its supply chain planning, operations, and transportation partners to effectively reduce its carbon footprint and emissions.

Bacardi Notches Sustainability Wins
Sustainability is no longer a little-known cause pushed by a small group of activists. The environment is officially a major player in the drinks industry, factoring into the calculations of big brands. Bacardi is one heavyweight producer leading the charge. The company officially released the results of their three year push towards sustainability and admittedly, it’s pretty impressive. Pushing ahead, Bacardi also announced some ambitious goals to keep up the momentum.

Announced in early 2014, Good Spirited was an ambitious environmental sustainability initiative with specific goals in sourcing, packaging, and operations to be achieved by 2017 and 2022 -- under the vision to return to the environment at least as much as we take away. Significant reductions have been achieved in greenhouse gas emission (GHG) intensity (59%) and water usage (50%), as well as Zero Waste to Landfill targets. In addition, the original sourcing goal to obtain 40% of sustainably sourced sugarcane-derived products used to make BACARDĺ® rums were not only achieved but more than doubled.

Bacardi Limited Aligns Corporate Responsibility Strategy to Include UN Sustainable Development Goals
Bacardi Limited, the largest privately held spirits company in the world, today announced the compilation of results of its environmental sustainability goals made in 2014 and expanded its “Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future” environmental initiative to now encompass the company’s entire Corporate Responsibility (CR) platform.

With the expansion, the Good Spirited platform now comprises Marketplace, which includes responsible marketing and responsible drinking, Philanthropy & Community Investment, People, as well as the initial focus areas of Responsible Sourcing and Environment. This commitment aligns family-owned Bacardi’s CR platform with most of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bacardi Announces Annual Good Spirited Awards for Environmental Sustainability Gains
While we’re all winners when sustainability becomes the norm, Bacardi announced its internal winners of its 4th Annual Bacardi Good Spirited awards. Employees, teams, and facilities received recognition for their substantial environmental achievements within five different award categories. From upcycled glassware in Australia to engineering feats in Puerto Rico, and continued efforts to popularize the Bacardi No Straws campaign, among other initiatives, the winners produced considerable achievements for the environment, brand recognition, and savings.
