CITGO Supports STEM Education

Through the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline, we actively support the academic exploration of STEM education in the schools near our Houston-based headquarters and refineries. Six CITGO Innovation Academy locations, 40 STEM partners and scholarship awards reach more than 35,000 students & educators.

The STEM Talent Pipeline provides grants to schools and educational organizations to support programs that increase student interest, retention and graduation rates; particularly at the elementary, high school and post-secondary levels. The program supports organizations that prepare students for STEM courses at technical institutions and universities.

CITGO Awards Scholarships to Spring Branch ISD Students Pursuing STEM Degrees
CITGO Petroleum Corporation is providing 15 high school graduates from Spring Branch Independent School District (ISD) with scholarships that will help them pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at four-year accredited universities. CITGO also awarded STEM scholarships to Alief and Houston ISD graduates this spring to help foster academic excellence in STEM among Houston-area students.

CITGO Ambassadors Selected to Explore the Ocean Aboard Famed Exploration Vessel Nautilus
CITGO Petroleum Corporation and the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) have selected four educators to participate in the 2017 CITGO Nautilus Ambassador Program, who will sail aboard the Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus during its summer expedition off the central California coast. CITGO Nautilus Ambassadors will spend five days aboard the E/V Nautilus during one-leg of a 6-month expedition alongside scientists and engineers, and interact with shore-based audiences via Nautilus Live, a web portal connecting future explorers onshore via telepresence technology at www.nautiluslive.org.

Fifth Annual CITGO Fueling Education Program Drives Importance of STEM and Classroom Creativity
CITGO Petroleum Corporation invites elementary and middle public school teachers to enter its fifth annual Fueling Education Program, focusing on the importance of engaging young students in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Now through September 9, public school teachers in grades K – 8 are encouraged to visit www.fuelingeducation.com for the chance to win STEM-related prizes to benefit their classrooms and schools, including the Grand Prize of an in-school teacher training session with ‘America’s Science Teacher,’ best-selling author, and Emmy-award winning television personality, Steve Spangler.

CITGO Partners with the University of Houston-Downtown Scholars Academy to Promote Local STEM Education
CITGO recently partnered with the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) Scholars Academy in support of its 17th annual UHD Student Research Conference (SRC). The partnership builds upon the company’s CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline initiative, which supports educational organizations near its operational areas to increase access to learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

CITGO Provides Elementary Schools with Student Engineering Projects
As part of the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline Program, CITGO has partnered with the Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB) and McNeese State University to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education to young minds through a hands-on learning experience called Engineering is Elementary (EiE).

CITGO and the Ocean Exploration Trust Award Mini-Grants to Fund STEM Education Efforts in Houston
As part of the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline program, CITGO Petroleum Corporation is partnering with the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) to award science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) mini-grants to educators dedicated to sharing ocean exploration with students. Two Houston-area schools, Olle Middle School and South Early College High School, are receiving funding through the OET Community STEM Mini-grant program to help engage and excite students through unique STEM experiences and encourage them to seek STEM careers.

CITGO and the Ocean Exploration Trust Welcome Science Communication Fellows for At-Sea STEM Expeditions
For the fourth consecutive year, CITGO Petroleum Corporation has teamed up with the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) to provide select educators the opportunity to explore the ocean and share that experience with students back home. This year, three teachers from CITGO operational areas have been selected as OET Science Communication Fellows.

CITGO and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Distribute Kindles to Houston-Area Students
In recognition of the large role classroom attendance plays in boosting students’ academic outcomes, CITGO Petroleum Corporation is again partnering with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) this May for the Kindling Young Minds program. Through Kindling Young Minds, select Houston-area students are awarded Kindle Fire tablets for achieving perfect or much-improved attendance records. Representatives from CITGO and HCSO will help to distribute the Kindles at Alief, Houston and Spring Branch Independent School District (ISD) schools; more than 50 schools are participating in the program this year.
