Regulators Examining Whether Performance-Based Incentives Could Be the Key to a Modernized Grid

Utility regulators in some U.S. states are considering the adoption of performance-based regulation to replace the traditional cost of service regulation. Under this model, the utility’s revenues would not be based on the total costs of providing service, but rather on a broad economic measure such as the Consumer Price Index in conjunction with a set of specific performance metrics related to the utility’s operations.

An Enlightened Energy Solution for Rural Africa

Solar energy provider Mobisol has joined the Business Call to Action (BCtA) with a commitment to provide 800,000 people and 50,000 small businesses in Kenya with reliable access to solar energy by 2020. In the process, the Berlin-based company plans to create 150 jobs along its value chain and provide training on solar energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 tons each year.

National Geographic Launches Earth Week on Sunday, Oct. 30, Airing Climate Change-Related Programming

National Geographic will kick off its first ever Earth Week on Sunday, October 30, launching six straight days of primetime programming focused on climate change. The broadcasting event, timed to lead up to the U.S. presidential election, will feature the global premieres of Before the Flood, Leonardo DiCaprio's documentary about climate change, and the second season of the Emmy-winning Years of Living Dangerously, in which Hollywood correspondents such as David Letterman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cecily Strong, and more travel around the world to witness its effects on communities and ecosystems. Earth Week begins at 7/6c on National Geographic on Oct. 30, and will continue nightly until Friday, Nov. 4.

Academy Award-winner and U.N. Messenger for Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, along with executives from the National Geographic Channel, welcomed U.N. diplomats, top Hollywood talent, and more to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on October 20 for a red carpet screening of Before the Flood, DiCaprio's forthcoming documentary about the worsening effects of climate change on global communities and ecosystems. The film, which follows DiCaprio as he travels the world interviewing individuals from every facet of society about the climate, will premiere on 21st Century Fox's National Geographic Channel on Sunday, October 30, at 9/8c in 171 countries and 45 languages.
