Sodexo Harnesses the Reach of Its Supply Chain to Influence Reductions in Water Use and Waste to Landfill

To date more than 13,000 of its sites globally have worked to raise awareness and impact behavior change around water waste. Through a strategic approach to flexing the muscle behind its supply chain and engaging everyone to include vendors, clients, customers, and its own employees, Sodexo makes a huge impact on reducing waste each and every day. Nowhere is that evident more than the work it does with consumers, as outlined in an infographic released today tiled, “Serving Customers.” Simply by encouraging small behavior changes such as reduced napkin use and recycling of paper, aluminum and cardboard, the company on the whole is able to make a tremendous impact.
“According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, every year Americans generate 254 million tons of garbage with the bulk of it ending up in landfills and incinerators that pollute both earth and air,” said Steve Cox, vice president corporate communications, Sodexo. “Our approach is to encourage and engage our clients, customers and supply partners regarding opportunities where we can collectively make more sustainable choices.”
Serving more than 9,000 sites throughout North America, Sodexo has encouraged 82 percent of its sites to recover used cooking oil. That effort alone was able to amass nearly 77,000 gallons of recycled cooking oil, which was then converted to biodiesel. In deploying its Sodexo Take One program to reduce napkin waste, it achieved a reduction in consumption by as much as 55 percent. Recycling initiatives have been equally successful with 95 percent of Sodexo client sites recycling cardboard, 86 percent recycling paper and 81 percent recycling aluminum.
