Recycling Democrats!

We’re defining ‘conservative” here today as one who conserves or promotes conservation—not in the political sense, although we are focusing on politicians. I got assigned the Democrats. I think it’s type casting just because I live in Massachusetts—but I also hunt deer, drink beer, drive a tractor, own guns and wield a chainsaw in the woods.

But I’m a devoted environmentalist to boot, and in recent years, the Dems have been more closely associated with conserving the earth than exploiting it. For example, in 2007, the Dems hosted recycling events in every state and created an online resource for folks to create their own recycling events. Pretty, well…democratic.

I went to the League of Conservation Voters website to research their scorecard—they rank members of congress of all parties and independents on their conservation voting record, from 0-100%. As you might suspect, there’s a lot of Dems with 100% ranking—far more than 10. So I thought I’d pick out Democrats from mainly Red states, like Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, etc and feature them. After all it seems it takes more guts to stand up for something in a state controlled but the other party, right? II included New Hampshire because you never know where they’re going to do. So here’s "hats off" to some Dems who had the guts (or the foolhardiness, depending on your perspective) to vote 100% on conservation issues in the last congress. These folks voted to protect chemical facilities from terrorism, for renewable energy, public transportation, green schools programs, preservation of public lands, getting kids out into nature and green job creation. It’s mostly white guys, but it’s not like they’re an endangered species in the US Congress. I took what I could find.
