Preparing Students for Success
Legg Mason and our affiliate colleagues in the US and UK are helping to ensure that students in our communities are starting the new school year off on the right foot – and have continued support throughout the academic year.
These efforts are aligned with our primary charitable/philanthropic focus, which is education, particularly in the area of underserved youth.
Recent Activities
- Annual Dorm Drive – New York employees sponsored the Bottom Line College Dorm Drive for the 6th year in a row and raised over $6,000 for the purchase of laptops and other necessities for six students. Recipients are from low-income families in New York City and are the first in their family to attend college.
- KickStart Money – UK colleagues participated in this education program to further financial literacy in primary schools.
- School Beautification/Clean-Up – HR colleagues across our US locations volunteered at the Crossroads School in East Baltimore as part of a Collaboration Day. The team helped prepare the school for students by painting hallways and organizing classrooms.
- School Supply Drives – Baltimore employees donated school supplies and backpacks for students and classrooms in underserved communities, including the POWER House in East Baltimore.
Mentoring Programs
- Big Brothers Big Sisters – Colleagues in New York are partnering for the 11th year to mentor middle school students through a bi-monthly workplace program at our New York Times office. In Baltimore, employees mentor students from Patterson High School where students come to our office once a month. Both programs focus on various life-skill development activities through quality time spent with their mentor.
- Cristo Rey – Cristo Rey students work in our Baltimore and New York offices weekly during the school year as part of the Corporate Work Study Program, where students gain job experience during the academic year. . Cristo Rey has been a Legg Mason partner since 2007.
- Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County – 2018 marks the 11th year that colleagues in Stamford, Connecticut, will participate in a very successful program with Childcare Learning Centers whereby volunteers read to preschoolers twice a month.
- Crossroads School – For the third year, Baltimore colleagues are mentoring middle school students twice a month at the Crossroads School. Mentors focus on academic, life-skill and relationship development with their respective mentees.
- Urban Alliance – Since 2009, we have partnered with Urban Alliance to host Baltimore City high school students working in our Baltimore office several days a week. The program is supplemented by a corresponding professional development program.
