Porsche Rents Out Rooftop for 2MW Solar Installation

Sports car maker Porsche is adding rooftop solar to its spare parts warehouse in Sachsenheim, Germany. Covering 40,000 square-feet and using 8,500 photovoltaic modules, the system generates nearly 2 million kilowatt-hours per year. That's the average energy consumption of about 500 four-person households.

Goldbeck Solar, the company behind the photovoltaic modules, is actually renting the rooftop space from Porshce. The generated electricity will then be fed back into the grid to local energy provider E&W Eichwald.

This is not the first time Porsche has ventured into rooftop solar. Last March, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) unveiled its first U.S.-based solar-power system in Ontario, California. The facility uses a HelioPower 80-kV solar power array with 372 Sharp solar modules. That system produces 135,000 kilowatt-hours annually.

"Progressive environmental protection and conservation of resources isn’t only a Porsche priority in production. Our central spare parts warehouse provides the ideal conditions for ecological energy generation," said head of production and logistics Wolfgang Leimgruber.

But Porsche isn't the only luxury maker going solar. Last year, even Ferrari installed a solar panel system at its facility in Maranello, Italy that generates 210,000 kilowatt-hours.

The photovoltaic system will be installed before the end of February, and the system will be connected to the grid just a few weeks after. Porsche says the system is one of the most modern and efficient in the Greater Stuttgart area. It will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1,780 tons each year.
