Overcoming a Handicap with Handiwork

“Taking care of a husband with multiple sclerosis and a 14-year old son at the same time can be very challenging,” says Beth Swob, assistant store manager in Piqua, OH.

So one reason hardware is her favorite department is because it has enabled her to take care of her home on her own. 

Beth started her career at Home Depot nine years ago as a part-time appliance specialist, and after working in several different departments including hardware, she now holds an assistant manager position. While she’s very proud of the fact that she has learned to drive a forklift, above all, Beth prides herself in being proficient in hardware.

One example is when, instead of calling in the pros to build a handicapped accessible ramp at home for her husband, Beth decided to tackle the project on her own. She purchased all the supplies from Home Depot and got down to business - cutting a doorway into the wall of the family room and adding the ramp days later. Now, her husband can easily get to the family room and sit by their big fireplace during the day while Beth is at work.
