Living Green in Your Eco-Friendly Apartment, Part II
LIVING GREEN — YOUR ECO-FRIENDLY APARTMENT, PART II
Last week, we went over a few of our top tips for green living in small spaces (condos, apartments, lofts). Below, find a few more ideas for making your humble abode as eco-friendly as possible!
Décor: Now that you’ve moved in and are getting settled, it’s time for the fun part: decorating, of course! Do your part to reduce carbon emissions and the effects of global warming/climate change and jazz up your space the carbon neutral way!
These days, you may be surprised by all the things that come in an organic form – everything from carpeting and rugs to furniture and pet supplies. Try to purchaseorganic, sustainable materials as much as possible!
For the “do-it-yourself” guru, these recyclable projects are perfect ways to reduce and reuse, offset carbon emissions, and they are guaranteed to liven up any room.
Houseplants and Herbs: Take advantage of your balcony and windows! If your loft, apartment or condo has a balcony that gets a good deal of sunlight, consider planting an herb or veggie garden outside. You may be surprised at the types of plants and produce that can be grown in very small spaces! Adding houseplants to your home décor is another great way to clean out toxins in the air – and plants are more eco-friendly than air fresheners or disinfectant spray!
Don’t Give Up On Composting: The idea of composting in a small space, such as an apartment, may make some people a bit squeamish. Don’t be deterred! There are a number of products on the market that make composting easy and odorless, such as stainless steel kitchen composters with carbon filters. Do some research and be sure to read customer reviews before making your purchase!
Recycling: Be conscious of your apartment or condo building’s policies regarding recycling and what can/cannot be placed in the recycling bins. If your building doesn’t recycle, or follows a strict policy that doesn’t accept certain types of materials, save these materials elsewhere and make it a point to visit your local recycling center once a month or every several weeks.
