Looking ahead to International Women’s Day, BNY Mellon’s Pershing unit has released the results of a public opinion survey exploring current attitudes about leadership styles and women at work. From Fortune 500 CEOs down to their own bosses, Americans want managers who eschew old-style command and control techniques in favor of listening, consultation, coaching and building community. Overwhelmingly, the poll found that these new leadership qualities are associated with women rather than men. Does it follow, then, that Americans want more women in charge? The answer is yes—and no.
