In Indiana, Greater Lafayette Leaders Honored as ‘Difference Makers’
PLAINFIELD, Ind., February 8, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Duke Energy has recognized four Greater Lafayette leaders with its Difference Maker award. They are among 10 statewide who have received the honor so far this year.
“As Indiana’s largest electric supplier, we have the privilege of working with a number of community leaders statewide,” said Dan Rhodes, Duke Energy’s Lafayette community relations manager. “Difference makers focus on improving their communities and go out of their way to bring about significant change. And they distinguish themselves from others by their dedication and impact.”
Duke Energy recognized the local honorees during halftime of recent Purdue basketball games. They include:
Jennifer Layton is executive director of LTHC Homeless Services, where she has worked for 22 years. What began as a job for Layton turned into a lifelong passion. During her tenure, the agency has grown. Over the past year, it assisted more than 1,800 people, including children and veterans, providing basics such as meals, showers, laundry facilities as well as crisis management and ongoing care.
Doug and Cindy Taylor are founding members of Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette. Motivated by the idea that everyone should have a decent place to live, the Taylors have dedicated themselves to the organization. Since 1985, 284 families in the Greater Lafayette area have been given the opportunity for homeownership through Habitat for Humanity, providing stability, security, and hope for the future.
Luana Welti is president of the Greater Lafayette Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers, an organization of mothers with children serving in the military, guard or reserves, or children who are veterans. Every year, the Blue Star Mothers drive vans of donated supplies to the wounded at Walter Reed Hospital. The group has also sent more than 500 care packages to our troops over the last few years.
Duke Energy Indiana’s operations provide about 6,800 megawatts of owned electric capacity to approximately 810,000 customers in a 23,000-square-mile service area, making it the state’s largest electric supplier.
