Harlem First: Symposium

January 25, 2016 /3BL Media/ - MFA Design for Social Innovation at the School for Visual Arts is bringing diverse voices together to understand why our neighborhoods are not as healthy as they should be, and what we can do about it.

We know that being healthy depends on more than seeing and being treated by a doctor. Many other factors in a neighborhood have an effect. But healthcare professionals, city agencies, nonprofits, and the community they serve often communicate poorly. Opportunity is missed.

On Monday February 1, join an extraordinary panel of speakers in a conversation that involves all the people involved in health in this community in finding solutions.

Panel:
– Cyrus Vance Jr., Manhattan District Attorney;
– Dr. Prabhjot Singh, Director of the Arnhold Global Health Institute;
– Clyde Williams, community leader, public servant, and Congressional candidate;
– Rob Carmona, co-founder of Strive;
– Carmen Quinones, East Harlem resident and tenants’ activist.

Moderator:
– Cheryl Heller, Chair, Design for Social Innovation at SVA

DSI students, together with Harlem residents, have been mapping an East Harlem neighborhood, looking at factors beyond the traditional purview of the medical profession, such as crime, homelessness, open space, poverty, availability of healthy food, and gentrification. On February 1, health professionals, politicians, local agencies, designers, community leaders, Harlem residents, and data scientists will gather to discuss their insights. What does it takes to improve the culture of health in the Harlem community? We view this initial effort as the beginning of a process that we hope to take to other neighborhoods and other cities in the U.S.
