Green Mountain Energy Earth Day at Discovery Green® Celebrates Renewable Energy With a Day of Art, Music and Family-Friendly Fun

Apr 9, 2025 10:00 AM ET

HOUSTON, April 9, 2025 /3BL/ - Green Mountain Energy Earth Day at Discovery Green® offers visitors fun and interactive opportunities to learn about sustainability on Saturday, April 19 from 12 to 5 p.m. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet” showcases renewable energy through interactive art, hands-on exhibits and engaging activities that highlight the power of solar, wind and water.

"We are proud to support Green Mountain Energy Earth Day at Discovery Green, which not only highlights the importance of renewable energy but also encourages the community to come together and make a positive impact on the environment,” said Andrea Ortega-Toledano, senior director of sustainability, Green Mountain Energy. “The event plays a crucial role in raising awareness and inspiring action, and we are honored to partner with Discovery Green to create lasting change for a cleaner, more sustainable future."

As part of that commitment to community, Green Mountain Energy Sun Club is hosting featured Houston-area sustainability grant recipients at exhibition booths during the Earth Day celebration. The nonprofits include Alzheimer’s Association of Houston and Southeast Texas, Houston Furniture Bank, Recipe for Success, Silambam Houston and Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy.

During the event, participants can join in an immersive performance of Squonk’s Brouhaha, presented in partnership with Houston First. Described by The New York Times as “ingenious, hallucinatory and hypnotic,” Brouhaha fuses imaginative visual design, playful staging and high-energy original music to create an experience that transcends your typical concert. At the heart of Brouhaha is a larger-than-life accordion – or Squonkcordion – that the audience gets to play.

Houston Public Works will also host its annual Water Works Festival, designed to engage and educate the public about the value of water. Attendees will learn about water conservation, the water cycle, local water systems, species habitats, weather, water quality and ecology. In addition, Houston Public Works will share more about the city’s water supply, water purification plants, wastewater treatment systems, conservation efforts, drought plan and stormwater projects.

Other activities include an opening ceremony with Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl, live painting, dynamic musical performances, eco-friendly arts and crafts for all ages, and a variety of exhibitors and food vendors. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Green Mountain Energy Earth Day strives to be a zero-waste event. Attendees are encouraged to reduce waste by bringing reusable water bottles and utensils.

Green Mountain Energy is a longtime supporter and the official energy provider of Discovery Green, providing the park with 100 percent clean, renewable energy. Since the park opened in 2008, Green Mountain Energy has helped Discovery Green avoid 55 million pounds of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent of planting more than 6,600 trees.

Green Mountain Energy Earth Day is presented by Discovery Green in partnership with Houston Public Works Waterworks Festival. Additional community partners include Citizens’ Environmental Coalition, Houston First and University of Houston-Downtown.
