Evolving Regulations: REACH, 5 Substances Added to the Candidate List

Recently, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) updated their list of Substances of High Concern (SVHCs). According to an article published on the ECHA website, there were five new SVHCs added to The Candidate List. The ECHA cited that the reasoning for these being added was due to “…the carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction, persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT), and very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) properties of the substances…”, expanding The Candidate List total to 168.

Once a substance has been added to the Candidate List, it could in the near future be added to the Authorization List. Once this transfer has occurred, the substance in question cannot be used or placed onto the market after a specified date unless explicit authorization has been given for a specific use.

In order to access the European market, having the data to ensure compliance with regulations such as REACH is necessary.
