European Chemical Agency Adds Five Substances to The Candidate List
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) recently appended The Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation.
According to an article published on the ECHA website, there were five new SVHCs added to The Candidate List. The ECHA cited that the reasoning for these being added was due to “...the carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction, persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT), and very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) properties of the substances…”, expanding The Candidate List total to 168.
The ECHA claims that the reason that they have released this information to the public as well as industry members, is that The Candidate List is comprised of substances which could one day be included on the Authorisation List. The policy of the ECHA is one that states, “Once they are on the Authorisation List, industry will need permission to continue using the substance after the sunset date...”, forewarning companies that changes to the way they do business could very well be in the immediate future.
As this regulation continues to evolve, it becomes prudent to stay abreast of the substances that are added to the Authorisation List. It also becomes necessary to stay mindful of the Candidate List as these substances could likely end up on the Authorisation List and impact production.
