Creating Value From Risk Management

Each year, Dutch leaders in risk management come together for the Deloitte RiskLab conference.  This year over 400 risk professionals descended on Amsterdam for a day full of presentations and breakout sessions. Deloitte teamed up with the leaders to discus turning risks into opportunities. 

One such risk professional was Jaime de Bourbon Parme, special envoy natural resources at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who presented on the conflict-free tin initiative. He argued that no company wanted to have conflict minerals in their supply chain, but it is difficult to make sure that your company stays away from them. So, in May 2012 he came up with the conflict-free tin initiative that made tin trackable through a bagging and tagging system at a conflict-free mine.

One such company that is taking advantage of the trackable tin is Intel, who recently announced that all of their microprocessors in 2014 will be conflict-free. By using the bag and tag system rather then to entirely stop purchasing from the area, they are maintaining the economy without financing rebel armies.
