Cascades Bolsters Its Leadership Role in Energy Efficiency
Kingsey Falls, November 26, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Cascades is marking the 15th edition of Energy Efficiency Week from November 24 to 30, an initiative of the Ministère des Ressources naturelles, by reiterating its commitment to reduce energy consumption, and encourages other companies to follow suit. Taking concrete action to help conserve our resources and the environment is something that everyone can do. With this in mind, Cascades announced in its 2013-2015 Sustainable Development Plan that it will continue its efforts to reduce the amount of energy it purchases for manufacturing, and has set a reduction target of 3% by the end of 2015.
Energy management at Cascades: Concrete projects with tangible results
Fifteen years ago, Cascades set up the innovative energy action group Cascades GIE Inc. with a view to improving energy efficiency at its various manufacturing facilities. Since its creation, Cascades GIE Inc. has carried out hundreds of projects with estimated gains of more than 7 500 000 gigajoules, and more than $60 million in cumulative energy savings.
By the end of 2015, Cascades plans to implement energy efficiency measures and projects that will save close to 600 000 gigajoules, or the equivalent of the consumption of 5 900 Canadian households. The initiatives include reducing the use of live steam, energy recovery through the installation of heat exchangers and daily monitoring of plant consumption in real time.
Thanks to their energy management approach, the Cascades facilities in Kingsey Falls, Jonquière, Cabano and Candiac are now members of Hydro-Québec’s EcoElectric network, made up of a group of major corporations recognized for their leadership and outstanding performance in energy efficiency.
Cascades is proud of the expertise it has developed over the years, and shares its success with external partners by offering its skills in energy efficiency. "A number of our customers have benefited from the advice of our energy efficiency experts, which allowed them to identify several opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Given its success, we will continue to offer this unique service for the benefit of our partners and the environment," explained Mario Plourde, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company.
According to Fabien Demougeot, Director of Cascades GIE Inc., "When it comes to energy, we must have the same objective as we do for waste management, which is permanent reduction. That is why we are applying the 3Rs in our strategy: reduce at the source, recover energy loss and replace with more energy-friendly technology.”
In anticipation of Energy Efficiency Week, Cascades sent a series of energy-saving measures for the home to its employees (also available at blog.cascades.com). For more details, consult the 2013-2015 Sustainable Development Plan, and the results of the 2010-2012 Plan.
