Modern day slavery is a problem that has emerged into a global epidemic. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), around 21 million people are victims of forced labor. Contrary to historical definitions of slavery, modern day slavery is the umbrella term for human trafficking, forced labor, bonded labor, child labor, involuntary and domestic servitude, and worker migration.

Usman Khan recently reported that, “The plight of modern day slaves is the most extreme manifestation of the essential logic of capitalism; these are human beings that enjoy no rights beyond those of the commodity: to be bought, sold and used.

The global epidemic of modern day slavery is heavily correlated with poor supply chain transparency. Global companies that have supply chain operations in developing regions of the world with little labor oversight can indirectly support modern day slavery.
