Black & Veatch and Royal HaskoningDHV Partner to Deliver Sustainable Water Solutions
Alternative water treatment technology could produce capital savings, environmental gains
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., September 27, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Black & Veatch has signed a teaming agreement with Royal HaskoningDHV to apply Nereda® wastewater treatment technology to projects in the United States. Developed by Royal HaskoningDHV, the innovative, sustainable solution is cost-effective, energy efficient and requires a footprint up to four times smaller than traditional water treatment systems.
Nereda wastewater treatment technology purifies water through a method called aerobic granular biomass. The streamlined process requires less mechanical equipment, reducing installation area by up to 75 percent compared to conventional water treatment systems. Fewer operational elements also equate to energy savings of up to 50 percent for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities.
“Nereda adds a leading edge technology to our sustainable water management offerings,” said Mike Orth, Executive Managing Director for Black & Veatch’s water business. “This economical and energy efficient solution provides an internationally proven, award-winning option for our clients. Nereda will provide ratepayers with cleaner wastewater, treated on a smaller footprint against lower costs.”
The Deodoro wastewater treatment plant in Rio de Janeiro is the first Nereda implementation in the Americas and opened in June, just ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games. The plant is contributing to better living conditions for nearly 480,000 Brazilians and will help improve water quality in local waterways.
“We trust that our partnership with Black & Veatch will catalyze adoption of this modern and sustainable treatment technology,” said Andreas Giesen, Director of Technology, Royal HaskoningDHV. “In combination with agreements with other leading service companies and a license partnership with a U.S.-based technology provider, we are poised to best serve the U.S. market.”
