Barrick's Julie Shuttleworth wins Australia Mine Manager of the Year award
(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) September 20, 2011 - Julie Shuttleworth, general manager at Barrick's Granny Smith mine in Australia, has been named Mine Manager of the Year at the Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
The award recognizes a mine manager in the country who has led a team to improve productivity, safety, environmental standards and reached notable milestones.
This has been a year of recognition for Shuttleworth. The nomination came from the Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME), which named her as a finalist in the CME Women in Resources Awards. In August, she was shortlisted as a finalist in two categories of the Australian Mining Prospect Awards — Mining’s Female of the Year, and winning Mine Manager of the Year.
Shuttleworth credits her strong emphasis on safety, teamwork, and a positive attitude for her career success. She has 18 years experience in the gold/copper mining industry in Australia, China and Tanzania, including 11 years with Barrick.
She says a manager’s work outside the mine is as critical as what is done on-site.
“I am proactive in supporting local communities,” she said. “In Tanzania I was a key driver in improving the university education for mining-related degrees, including organizing university field trips to the Barrick sites and contributing books to the university libraries.
"Since starting at Granny Smith, I have been involved with a lot of initiatives in Laverton, particularly with the school and local police, and with WASM [West Australian School of Mines].”
An energetic spokesperson for the mining industry, she attends schools, universities, career fairs and seminars to communicate with students and young professionals.
Shuttleworth is enthusiastic about encouraging people to consider careers in the mining industry. She shares her passion for developing young professionals and uses her own work and life experiences to provide inspiration and encouragement. She also sponsors the Julie Shuttleworth Prize in Mineral Processing at Murdoch University.
Shuttleworth started with Barrick in 2000 as a plant metallurgist at the Bulyanhulu mine in Tanzania. Her Barrick career has taken her from Bulyanhulu to the Buzwagi mine, also in Tanzania, and now to Granny Smith in Western Australia. Travel is in her blood, having visited over 70 countries to date.
“I was very surprised and happy to be awarded the Mine Manager of the Year Award. To be recognized at that level across Australia is very rewarding,” Shuttleworth says.
