Australian Government Names Barrick's Pierina Mine a Leader in Sustainable Mining
(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) September 27, 2011 - Barrick’s Pierina mine in Peru is featured as one of the case studies in a recent report about best practices for poverty reduction and human development. The report, entitled A Guide to Leading Practice Sustainable Development in Mining, highlights the positive influence modern mining operations can have on the places where they operate.
The report was produced by the Australian government’s Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.
The Pierina case study shows improvements in social and economic progress in the Independencia and Janga districts located near the mine, and attributes these improvements to the mine’s community engagement efforts related to improving access to clean water, health care, housing and education. It also notes that Pierina contributes positively to competitiveness, creates a stable business environment, retains a skilled base of employees and provides essential services to the community.
