The Amsterdam Brewery Big Wheel Amber Beer: No Bike Lanes Required

Located in the heart of Toronto, The Amsterdam Brewing Company is a community brewery dedicated to producing a quality local product.

A leader of the craft beer revolution, Dutchman Roel Bramer purchased the first brewery in the fall of 1985 and named it after the city he was born in.  In September of 1986, The Amsterdam Brasserie and Brewpub opened its doors and became the first of its kind in Toronto.

Only 2 short years later, Bramer opened a second brew pub called The Rotterdam which was the largest brew pub in the world at the time and was equipped with a $500,000 brew house.  Because of its size and changes in the liquor laws as the time, Bramer decided to use as a microbrewery instead and sold his original pub to create "The Amsterdam Brewing Company".

The Amsterdam Brewing Company introduced Torontonians to the fine craft lagers and ales that are available right now and Go Green Go Dutch Go Bike saw their company and product as the perfect match for this year’s beer garden at the end of the ride.

Committed to delivering the highest quality craft lagers and ales in Toronto, The Amsterdam Brewing Company believes that freshness and purity are what makes good beer great and they brew their beers in the traditional European brewing process to give each one a distinctive, premium body and flavor.

It was instantly decided that their Big Wheel Amber would become the official beer of the 2012 Go Green Go Dutch Go Bike ride. They likened the creative process of making the beer to that of mastering the ability to ride a Big Wheel bicycle.  Both take patience and practice. Their award winning amber was created out of desire to make a perfectly balanced beer that would combine the qualities of a rich traditional pale ale with the drinkability of a modern lager. Currently located at 21 Bathurst Street in Toronto, the leader of the microbrewery, Jeff Carefoote and his talented staff work on their incredible product all year round and were excited to be a part of the Go Green Go Dutch Go Bike day. Proceeds from the ride went to The Toronto Community Foundation’s “Recipe for Community” project to teach kids in need bicycle safety. The project will also help provide them with helmets and the other tools needed to stay safe on the road.
