2 million Pieces of “Stuff”: Going Home Instead of the Landfill
Greenopolis recently blew through the 2 million mark in bottles, cans and other items recovered in our Tracking Stations at our partner Whole Foods nationwide!
2 million Pieces of “Stuff”: Going Home Instead of the Landfill
As we celebrate Earth Month and come up on Earth Day April 22nd, we want to take a minute to look at the accomplishment that represents, especially in partnership with our partners at Whole Foods and Nestle Re-source Water. There are now over 100 Greenopolis Tracking Stations in place at Whole Foods and more rolling out all the time.
Nearly half of us aren’t served by any form of curbside recycling program, and when we are on the go with kids, appointments and chores, it’s often tough to find a place to recycle our bottles and cans. But now in select locations, and soon everywhere, whenever you go to Whole Foods, you can take your recycling with you. What’s more, you’ll be rewarded for it three ways-1) immediate gratification as you receive your reward ticket from the machine; 2) online as you accumulate Think Green Reward Points on Greenopolis to redeem locally at over 130,000 places for things you use every day, like restaurants, DVD rentals, hardware, hotel getaways, movies, car rentals, sporting events and food; 3) the good feeling you’ll get that you recaptured instead of wasted.
Thanks to our partnership with RE-Source water, bottles you bring back become bottles again- Re-source water bottles are currently 25% recycled material, and the percentage is going up. We won’t stop until it’s 100% recycled- a true cradle to cradle system, just like Ma Nature. Reuse materials, save energy.
Every container you bring back makes a difference to ol’ Mother Earth. Each aluminum can you recycle saves 95% of the energy it takes to make a new one. That’s enough to run a 100 watt light bulb for 20 hours, or power your computer for 3 hours! If every home recycled just one more can a year, it would power over 19000 homes for that year. One a day per household, and it would power nearly 7 million homes!
Each plastic bottle you recycle saves enough energy to run a 60 watt bulb for 6 hours. If every home in the US recycled only one additional PET bottle this year, it could power 3500 homes for the entire year. If each home recycled one a day, it could power 1.3 million homes for the year, and save about 1.5 million tons of plastic – 3 billion pounds- from our oceans, landscapes and landfills.
So do your part today. Join Greenopolis, find your closest Tracking Station and start sending your “stuff” back where it can do some good- being made into new products and saving precious energy. It all starts with that next piece of “stuff”…
