Winthrop-University Hospital Funds 7 kW Solar Pv System At Manhasset Secondary School Through CBS EcoMedia’s EcoAd Program
Financial support from Winthrop-University Hospital and Arrow Exterminating advertising on CBS will generate clean renewable energy for school and cut CO2 emissions
MANHASSET, NY, October 21, 2012 /3BL Media/ - Students, faculty members, Indian Rocks Foundation supporters, members of the Manhasset community along with clean energy and lacrosse fans celebrated the ribbon cutting and unveiling of Manhasset Secondary School’s new solar photovoltaic (PV) panels now installed on the roof of the athletic field’s concession building. The renewable energy addition was made possible by Winthrop-University Hospital with additional financial support by Arrow Exterminating from both companies’ EcoAd advertising through CBS EcoMedia.
The new solar PV system will generate an average of over 7,300 kWh of electricity per year and cut carbon dioxide emissions from the school by over 13,870 lbs. annually. The solar electric system is part of a $3,304,242 Manhasset School District-wide renewable energy and energy efficiency overhaul.
The on-field celebration took place at halftime of the women’s lacrosse game between Syracuse University and Yale University, which was played on the newly installed turf the Indians Rock Community Foundation funded along with new permanent stadium lighting. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony honored both the completion of the stadium lighting and turf installation as well as the unveiling of the solar panels. The enthusiastic audience heard remarks from Manhasset Board of Education President Carlo Prinzo, Superintendent of Schools Charlie Cardillo, Director of School Facilities Armand Markarian, Indians Rock Community Foundation Representative Carl Pate, Ed Keating, Vice President of Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations of Winthrop-University Hospital, Michael Deutsch, entomologist for Arrow Exterminating and Paul Polizzotto, President and Founder, CBS EcoMedia Inc.
“We are very grateful that the entire cost of the solar PV project was covered by the financial support that came from EcoAd advertising run by Winthrop-University Hospital and Arrow Exterminating with CBS EcoMedia,” said Armand G Markarian, PE, Manhasset’s Director of School Facilities, who was instrumental in obtaining the funding for the district. “We anticipate about $1,000 in annual electric cost savings to the district from reduced electric bills and by selling electricity back to Long Island Power Authority. The solar power we generate will help offset electricity costs to operate the concession building and sports field lighting.”
The solar electric system is part of a $3,304,242 Manhasset School District-wide renewable energy and energy efficiency overhaul. The CO2 emission reductions from the Concession building’s solar system will not only cut greenhouse gas production they will also have the same environmental impact as planting more than 850 trees over the lifetime of the system.
“Winthrop-University Hospital is deeply committed to the health and well-being of all the communities we serve. We are delighted to be working with CBS and EcoMedia to make a contribution that has both an immediate and long-term impact on improving the quality of life for the residents of Manhasset. A greener environment is a healthier environment,” said John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop.
“The solar panel installation at Manhasset Secondary offers a perfect example of the multiple benefits generated by each one of our EcoAd projects,” said Paul Polizzotto, President and Founder of CBS EcoMedia, Inc. “While solar power will lower Manhasset’s energy bills, freeing up funds to be used for critical educational programs, this project also teaches students – and the public – about the value of solar power, lowers Manhasset’s carbon footprint, and created jobs in the local community. We’re so grateful to our partners, Winthrop-University Hospital and Arrow Exterminating, for their commitment to improving the quality of life in Manhasset; without their generous financial support of our EcoAd Program, this project simply would not have been possible.”

About Manhasset Secondary School
The Manhasset School District is unique in that the school system is large enough to provide exceptional financial resources, variety in its educational programs and multiple professional services for all its students – yet it is small enough to emphasize the individual and special needs of all its students. The possibility of combining the best qualities of suburban and urban living has attracted a large number of residents from the managerial and professional classes and their personal and financial support of the school district is evidenced by the excellent educational and extracurricular programs available to the students. District enrollment as of September 2012 is approximately 3,295 students.
There are two K-6 elementary schools (Munsey Park School and Shelter Rock School), and a Secondary School, which houses the Manhasset Middle School, 7-8, and Manhasset High School, 9-12.
Manhasset High School, grades 9-12, has a current enrollment of approximately 1003 students, 264 of whom are members of the class of 2013. The program of study offered is outstanding in preparing students to make the transition to, and meet the demands of, college level academic work or other further study.
As of June 2012, 80% of our seniors sat for one or more Advanced Placement courses. Approximately 80% of the student body participates in one of our more than 65 clubs, performance groups or athletic teams. 94% of the 218 members of the Class of 2012 continued their education. Of that number, 96% entered four-year colleges and universities and 4 % entered two-year colleges.
The District’s’ K-12 rigorous, innovative academic program is aimed at helping each student reach his or her full potential. The District is fortunate to be able to achieve this goal while maintaining one of the lowest school residential property tax rates in Nassau County.
