We have both a responsibility and an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In just the last 50 years, scientists and experts report global GHG emissions have grown by nearly 70%, and that GHG concentrations in the Earth’s atmosphere have increased nearly 30% in that same span.
The data shows that our climate will continue to warm in the next 100 years, with significant impacts on people, wildlife, agriculture, the economy, and our planet. While Cisco has made significant progress in reducing our emissions — 41% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions over the last 10 years, for example — there’s plenty of work to be done to solve this global problem.
At Cisco, corporate social responsibility is at the core of our business, our culture, and how we invest our resources. It’s why GHG emissions reduction is one of our most material environmental issues and a core component of our overall CSR strategy to accelerate global problem solving, through our technology and expertise, to positively impact people, society, and the planet.
I recently spoke with a few Cisco experts representing the key areas of our GHG emissions reduction strategy. We highlighted how Cisco is specifically reducing global emissions by improving the energy efficiency of products and our operations while also encouraging our suppliers to improve their own operational energy efficiency.
As part of the podcast, we discussed Cisco’s ambitious long-term GHG reduction goals and how they plan to achieve them in their respective areas of the business. My guests included:
- Andy Smith, Global Sustainability Manager in our Workplace Resources organization
- Joel Goergen, Cisco Distinguished Engineer
- Abbey Burns, Sustainability Manager in our Supply Chain organization
After listening, you’ll see that the earth’s natural cycles are being disrupted and that these disruptions impact all facets of our lives. As individuals, businesses, industries, and communities, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to help address this global problem.
