Making Waves | Water News From Xylem

Making Waves is a digital news site from Xylem. Although the site was launched in 2012, its history as a print magazine dates back to the 1960s.

Over the years, Xylem’s solutions have expanded to cover a wide range of technologies and industries. The company’s products and services can move, treat, analyze and monitor water, and return it safely to the environment.

Our goal is still the same: to help you solve your water challenges by sharing stories about new products, best practices and customer solutions.

Why Collecting Less Water Data is Putting Us at Risk
With climate change and water scarcity threatening countries around the world, we need global water data more than ever. Unfortunately, Xylem’s new research reveals that the world is actually collecting and sharing less water data from on-site sensors. A lot less.

This means governments and leaders are making decisions in the dark. Let’s make smarter decisions based on facts. Learn about this problem and what we can do to fix it.

Yacht Converted into Mobile Science Lab with Xylem Solution
Up to 15 percent of the world’s cargo traffic is handled in the Baltic Sea, making it one of the busiest areas for ship traffic in the world. As part of an EU project, a yacht has been modified with Xylem water-monitoring technology to research the environmental impact of shipping in the region.

Today the Baltic Sea is heavily trafficked by a variety of ships, including ferries, cruise ships, oil tankers, car carriers, and container and other cargo ships. Due to its narrow straights and shallow waters, the sea is difficult to navigate. In some of the major ship lanes, one large ship passes on average every ten minutes.

The ever-expanding shipping and tourism industries have led to growing environmental pressure on the waterway.

Video on Floating Desalination Plant Wins Xylem Water Prize
A team of students from India recently won the Xylem Water Prize for their video on how to solve water. The competition was part of the International Junior Science Olympiad, which this year had the theme “Water and Sustainability”.

The 14th annual International Junior Science Olympiad 2017 was held in the Netherlands in December 2017. Students aged 15 and under from 50 countries competed with one another in physics, biology and chemistry.

As a sponsor of the Olympiad, Xylem launched the first Xylem Water Prize, which invited participating students to produce a video answering the question: “How do you solve water?” All submissions were evaluated for impact, clarity, creativity and innovation by an international judging panel.

Social Impact & Volunteering

Xylem Employees Volunteer to Improve Water Resources
During Xylem’s Month of Service in October, employees volunteered for water-related activities in their communities, including cleaning up water sources and rebuilding homes in Houston. Xylem has set a goal for employees to volunteer 35,000 hours during 2017. We spoke with Michael Fields, Director of Xylem Watermark, to learn more.

Xylem Installs First UV Cryptosporidium Barrier in Florida
A water treatment plant in Florida will soon be the first in the state to use a UV cryptosporidium barrier. Xylem will supply its advanced Wedeco LBX Series UV disinfection system to protect against cryptosporidium in West Palm Beach.

Cryptosporidium is the leading cause of waterborne disease outbreaks in the US, impacting almost 750,000 people each year with potentially severe symptoms. As the chlorine-resistant cryptosporidium parasite is easily inactivated with a low ultraviolet (UV) dose, many drinking water plant operators are turning to UV disinfection to provide safe drinking water for their communities.
