Greener Products and Solutions

We actively integrate sustainability into the product development process and look at all phases of the product life cycle for opportunities to develop products and tools that deliver the highest performance in innovation, quality, safety and effectiveness, while minimizing environmental impact. These efforts enable our customers to carry out cutting-edge research, while positively contributing to their own environmental impact goals.

Designing products for sustainability, evaluating and selecting suppliers against sustainability criteria, pursuing green chemistry, and reducing packaging and end-of-life impact through recycling are all recognized as important aspects of greener products and solutions.

Cooler Return Program Is a ‘Win-Win’ for Lab
As a believer in the coexistence of science and the environment, the Glaunsinger Lab at the University of California-Berkeley takes a proactive approach to its efforts to recycle and reuse coolers needed for the storage and shipment of temperature-sensitive reagents, chemicals and kits.

Finding the Value in Iteration, Not Innovation
I have a vitriolic reaction to the word innovation. I’ve actively tried to scrub it from my vocabulary. I am also that painful colleague who raises an eyebrow when I hear the word—or even worse—forces the issue in discussion to really understand if we’re using the word correctly. There’s this expectation in the corporate world that innovation is the Holy Grail—the one and only path—but when you look at what actually happens in corporate land, innovation is scarce to be found.

DOZN™ - A Quantitative Green Chemistry Evaluator
MilliporeSigma created a unique, web-based greener alternative scoring matrix, also known as DOZN™: a quantitative green chemistry evaluator based on the 12 principles of green chemistry. The 12 principles of green chemistry provide a framework for learning about green chemistry and designing or improving materials, products, processes and systems. DOZN™ scores products based on metrics for each principle and aggregates the principle scores to derive a final aggregate score. The system calculates scores based on manufacturing inputs, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information, which provide a green score for each substance. DOZN™ is flexible enough to encompass the diverse portfolio of products, ranging from chemistry to biology-based products.

MilliporeSigma Launches First Green Chemistry Rating System
We often think of chemicals as highly toxic materials that could even prove lethal. But chemistry is everywhere and we rely on it for everything we need in daily life, from the ink in our pens to the actual food we eat. It is an integral part of our routines and industrial processes. As such, chemicals also need a green overhaul as they can be aggressive to the planet and animal lives, and must be replaced with safer alternatives.

Take Giant Steps Toward Smaller Footprints with DOZN(TM)
Our approach to evaluating greener chemicals is based on the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. We recognize that these principles distill into three major categories: improving resource use, more efficient use of energy, and minimizing human and environmental hazards.

PerkinElmer, Thermo Scientific, Bioz, And More: News From July 2017
Companies are interested in improving chemicals to reduce environmental impacts, also known as green chemistry. A new publication in ACS Sustainable discusses the 12 principles of green chemistry that outline a framework for identifying a greener chemical or process, spanning aspects in health hazard, ecological risk, and resource efficiency across a product lifecycle.
