Institute for CSR Alumni Reflections: Interview with Kelly Waldron, Director of Capacity and Performance at United Way Worldwide (formerly with Deloitte)
Why did you choose to participate in the Institute for Corporate Social Responsibility and what year did you graduate?
The Institute for CSR was an incredible opportunity to learn from industry leaders – like Tim McClimon from American Express and Diane Melley from IBM – as well as network and learn from my peers in the field. I was part of the inaugural class (2014) and learned a great deal.
What was your favorite part of the program?
Hearing first-hand from leaders in the CSR field was invaluable. To hear what challenges they face and how they work to provide the best solution for their corporate goals and their community was inspiring. Also, it’s always great to hear you are not alone with some of the struggles we all face in this dynamic and ever-changing landscape.
How have you used the knowledge and/or connections you gained at the Institute to improve your work?
Since my time at the Institute, I have switched jobs, but I still use much of what I learned, maybe even more now. Understanding more about the intersection of business and community is critical. This exciting area is truly where we all have the chance to make an impact for the lives of those in our community.
What would you tell prospective participants about the program?
This is well worth your time, resources and energy. The faculty is fabulous, the program is very well run, and your classmates will represent a variety of industries, programs and corporate approaches, which will enrich your knowledge, understanding and effectiveness in your daily work.
Do you have any tips for 2017 registrants on how to get the most out of their participation?
Make sure to join every class, ask many questions, build relationships, and just jump in with both feet!
