Freeport-McMoRan's El Abra Operation in Chile Offers Free Training for Indigenous Leaders

August 13, 2020 /3BL Media/ - Minera El Abra, in partnership with the Institute of Public Affairs of the University of Chile (UC), have launched a free online training platform for indigenous communities in the Antofagasta Region.

The Comprehensive Knowledge for Community Strengthening program will train 100 leaders and members of indigenous communities in Alto El Loa, Calama and Ollagüe, to strengthen knowledge, skills and competences in various topics.

This is the first certification program with UC designed jointly with indigenous leaders, experts, local actors and academics. The training will strengthen organizational and identity competencies and skills at the territorial and community level, such as conflict mediation, enhancing community leadership and special project development. The course also incorporates sustainability issues such as protection of the environment and water resources and local heritage preservation.

The course will run from July through November 2020. The teaching team is made up of academics from the UC Law School, the Water Law and Management Center, academics from the UC Urban Studies Institute and the UC Master in Cultural Heritage, among others.
