Compassion in World Farming Awards Aramark for Poultry Welfare Progress in the US

Aramark was one of five US food businesses celebrated by Compassion in World Farming for notable work to improve animal welfare standards at the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. The event was held in Berlin on June 28 and was created to demonstrate that awareness of farm animal welfare is quickly rising in the public and business consciousness, according to Compassion in World Farming.

In order to qualify for this award, companies must either currently source 100% cage-free eggs, or have committed to achieving this within a 5 year timeframe. At the end of 2015, Aramark completed the transition to purchasing 100% cage-free shell eggs in the U.S. Aramark is also working to transition purchases of liquid, pre-cracked, eggs in the U.S. by 2020, or sooner if possible.

Aramark announced its Animal Welfare Principles and Policy in April 2015, and has continued to make progress against its commitments.  The principles and policy represent the company's global position on farm animal welfare and also provides details on our purchasing commitments specific to the U.S. 

“While the egg industry experienced significant fluctuations in product availability and pricing over the last few years, we worked in partnership with our suppliers to ensure sufficient supply of third party certified cage-free shell eggs. In purchasing 30 million shell eggs each year in the U.S., we impacted the lives of 115,000 hens,” Said Scott Barnhart Aramark Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain and Procurement.
